What types of asbestos do we identify during our survey?

Asbestos Cement: Asbestos cement, also known as fibro or AC sheeting, was widely used in the construction industry for its durability and fire-resistant properties. It was commonly used in roofing, siding, and piping materials. However, the dangers lie in the inhalation of asbestos fibers released when the material is disturbed, which can lead to serious respiratory diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Floor Tiles and Adhesives: Floor tiles and adhesives containing asbestos were popular for their strength and heat resistance. They were commonly used in homes, schools, and commercial buildings. However, the risk arises when these materials are damaged or disturbed during renovation or removal, releasing asbestos fibers into the air. Inhalation of these fibers poses a significant health hazard.

Asbestos Rope and Cloths: Asbestos rope and cloths were utilised in various industrial applications for their heat-resistant properties. They were commonly used in high-temperature environments such as boilers, furnaces, and steam pipes. However, the fibers in these materials can become airborne when frayed or damaged, posing a risk of inhalation and subsequent health problems.

Thermal Insulation: Asbestos-containing thermal insulation was extensively used in buildings, ships, and industrial facilities for its ability to withstand high temperatures. It was commonly found in areas such as boiler rooms, pipes, and ductwork. However, disturbing or removing this insulation can release asbestos fibers into the air, leading to serious health risks for workers and occupants.

Insulating Board: Asbestos insulating board (AIB) was commonly used in the construction industry for its fire-resistant and insulating properties. It was utilized in ceiling tiles, wall panels, and partitions. However, the danger lies in the friable nature of AIB, meaning it can easily release asbestos fibers into the air when damaged or disturbed. Inhalation of these fibers can lead to asbestos-related diseases.

The Dangers of Asbestos Products: The use of asbestos in various products was widespread due to its desirable properties, but it has since been linked to serious health risks. When asbestos-containing materials are disturbed or deteriorate over time, they release microscopic fibers into the air. Inhalation of these fibers can cause lung diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, often with devastating consequences.
